Farmer’s Dog
Usually will eat only after pooping after a walk
Don’t need to feed at a set time as long as once in the morning and once in the evening after pooping after a walk
She occasionally skips a meal (doesn’t feel like eating)
Allow 12 hours to thaw frozen packet in the refrigerator
One packet = 4 meals (two days). Feed without heating up.
If she’s not interested in the meal:
Entice her with a Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Blend pellet. Hold the pellet in your hand above her bowl. When she tries to take the pellet, drop it into the bowl, so she starts eating what’s in the bowl.
(newest technique) Get her excited with a piece of beef liver, and make her see the beef liver (just one small piece) go into her bowl.
Usually she’ll start eating. She doesn’t always finish eating directly from the bowl. Maybe because the food is too sticky. Feeding her by spoon usually works. If she walks away from her meal and comes back, try to spoon-feed some more.
If she doesn’t eat much, sometimes I wrap small amounts of her food in a small piece of roast beef and hand-feed her. (Optional; OK if no roast beef on hand)
Save any leftover food for the next meal.
If she barks it doesn’t always mean she wants food (especially after she just ate). She may want attention (have you sit with her) or to play.
Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Blend Pellets
If she doesn’t eat much Farmer’s Dog for her meal, feel free to let her eat her fill of Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Blend pellets. She’s OK eating them dry. She’s more likely to eat when fed by hand (rather than pellets in her bowl).
Beef Liver Treats
She can have one or two pieces of dried beef liver treats a day
Cosequin
Feed one Cosequin every other day (anytime, preferably before first meal)
How to feed
Cut the Cosequin into four small pieces, otherwise it’s too big. Each piece needs to be concealed in a yummy wrapper.
Thin pan-fried scrambled egg sheet and deli roast beef (London Broil) slices work as medicine wrappers (peanut butter doesn’t work; cheese slices may work but I don’t want her to eat too much cheese).
I will have a container of individually rolled slices of roast beef (London Broil from the deli), frozen. She doesn’t like 3-day old roast beef, so I freeze the slices, and thaw a slice as needed, to keep them fresh. If the slices are small, thaw two small slices.
The night before you need a slice of roast beef as a Cosequin wrapper, thaw a frozen roll in an air-tight container in the fridge. Overnight is just enough time for it to thaw so that it tastes fresh. Use the roast beef slice the next day.
If her ear(s) seem irritated, dab a cotton ball with Epiotic ear cleanser, and rub inside the ear (OK to go deep). Otherwise, her ears get cleaned every Friday. (optional)
One small dab of GenTeal ointment on each eye each night (optional)
One pearl size drop of toothpaste brushed on each side of her mouth and the front teeth. I do not brush the insides of her teeth. After brushing, wash silicone thumb brush in dishwashing liquid and let it dry in its container.
Other
She licks/bites her vulva. Distract her with attention and Encourage her to stop. (Pry her; we are her cone.)
